Abstract:
We study information-theoretic problems of relaying over multi-hop communication networks, starting with the simplest setting being a cascade of two channels. This problem was first motivated by (Jog and Loh, 2020) and (Huleihel et. al), where they proposed a simple model involving two agents, a teacher and a student and an unknown one-bit random variable. We derive sharp performance bounds for this problem that settle two conjectures made in these works. We also study the generalizations where the random variable is multi-bit and when the message is passed through an arbitrary directed network, as well as a related many-hop setting called the information velocity problem.
