Abstract:

Telemedicine is a growing phenomenon that combines the intensity of medical practices and sociotechnical complexity of distant interaction systems. This has generated significant interest in the topic amongst IS researchers. However, the resulting literature remains fragmented, which limits the ability of future researchers to build on the existing corpus of knowledge on the topic. In order to address this challenge, we conducted a systematic review of all telemedicine articles published in top-tier IS journals. The results provide five emerging themes that help organizing the literature. Building upon these themes, we provide a theoretical framework that can guide IS scholars in making sense of the literature and identifying opportunities for future research.
