Reshaping Healthcare: Will Ubiquitous, Shared Decision-Making Enabled by Modern Technologies be a Game Changer ?

ABSTRACT:
Shared decision-making and accompanying patient decisions aids are being regarded as a cornerstone in patient-centered healthcare with evidence-based beneficial effects. New technologies are currently being explored as a means to ensure patient participation not only in one-off decisions but also in many phases of the patient journey. In Norway, both one-off and continuous decision support systems are being constantly advanced. This seminar will introduce our omnipresent approach to shared decision-making embedded in DECIDE Treatment, an integral solution to shared decision-making that spans the gamut of clinical practices. Our novel research enables patients and healthcare providers to collaborate within a common framework, is enriched by monitoring data, and support shared decision-making and health optimization within six main strategies, including hyper-compliance, support from family, and improvement of decision quality. The results from patients and clinicians piloting the system will be discussed.
BIODATA:
M.D. Oystein Eiring is an editor at the National Electronic Health Library in the National Institute of Public Health and the head of Clinical Services at the Innlandet Hospital Trust. He is a Norwegian psychiatrist currently in charge of regional initiatives to promote Shared Decision-Making (SDM) during clinical encounters in specialist services. M.D. Eiring has been chairing one of the main research and innovation programs within clinical decision support in Norway and he is leading the development of DECIDE Treatment, a health optimization system supporting patients and clinicians optimize patients' decisions, treatment and health. With the passion in helping patients with modern technologies, he is also completing a Ph.D. at the University of Oslo, Oslo, Norway.
