Cognitive Assistant for the Elderly

Abstract:
Cognitive assistant means to augment or supplement missing or weakened abilities of people with disabilities and elderly people, using the power of cognitive computing technologies or AI. I will focus on cognitive assistants for elderly people. The life expectancy in Japan was extended 30 years from 60 to 90 in this 70 years. On the other hand, nation-level healthcare cost is increasing drastically. We need to create a new model for the active aging society. In the talk, I will introduce technologies to enable active aging society. I will start from accessibility and usability, social connection, Internet of Things especially for home and care facility, intelligent assistant by using cognitive computing technologies and brain science to seek solution for dementia. I will also showcase some projects that implement such solutions in the real world.
Biodata:
Dr. Hironobu Takagi is a senior technical staff member, manager of accessibility research at IBM Research Tokyo. He has been leading research on accessibility, HCI, and cognitive computing over the last two decades. He is a working group member on the Council for Aging Society, Japanese Ministry for Internal Affairs and Communication.
