Abstract:

We propose that semantic technologies should be extended to provide a new generation of semantic models. For instance, direct representation could be introduced to provide highly-structured versions of scientific research reports. Similarly, rich semantic modeling might improve the indexing of historical newspapers by incorporating structured descriptions of events and of the community. This talk, will provide a broad overview of several threads of our research related to the development of rich semantics and direct representation models. We will describe exploratory studies on interactive timelines, extensions to the Basic Formal Ontology, descriptive programming, and the development of a structured applied epistemology.


Biodata:

Robert (Bob) Allen received his doctorate in experimental psychology at UCSD. He joined the Research organization at Bell Laboratories to participate in their work on the "office of the future". He then joined to the Bellcore Applied Research group in information science. His research included neuromorphic learning networks, recommender systems, and digital libraries. He was the Editor-in-Chief of the ACM Transactions on Information Systems for 10 years and later Chair of the ACM Publications Board. Since 1998 he been a senior faculty member at number of universities around the world.
