Feast Your Eyes on some Matrices and Trees, then get a Hand on some Commands

Abstract:
I will present three recent projects on information visualization and multitouch interaction at ETS in Montreal, Canada. First, the Generalized Plot Matrix (GPLOM) provides a scalable, interactive overview of a database table containing a mix of categorical and continuous variables. Second, I will show how visualizations of trees can be compared by evaluating their space efficiency using mathematical limits. Third is a multitouch radial menu that allows a user to quickly select commands and provide continuous control. These projects are joint work with Jean-Francois Im, Rock Leung, Jean-Marc Robert, and Shrey Gupta. Finally, I will be giving away free "HoloLens" developer kits (paper edition) to the first 20 attendees. These augmented reality simulators are wireless, compatible with all eye glasses, power-free, less than 1 mm thick, flexible, and weigh less than 20 grams.
Biodata:
Michael McGuffin worked as a software developer at Alias|wavefront and Discreet Logic (both companies now part of Autodesk) before completing a Ph.D. at University of Toronto and then landing his current job as professor at ETS in Montreal, Canada. He has served on the program committee for the IEEE InfoVis conference during multiple years, and his InfoVis 2009 paper received an Honorable Mention.
