Electronic Medical Record (EMR) Adoption at Jurong Health

ABSTRACT:
Juronghealth is a greenfield hospital that went live in June 2016 with a fully integrated HIMSS7-capable Electronic Medical Record (EMR). This talk chronicles the EMR implementation journey from the time of inception to 9 months post live. It gives a short overview of the healthcare IT landscape in Singapore and then dives into the specific stages of our implementation, project team structure and the actual go-live with its attendant learning points and successes. To the uninitiated, go-live is only the start of the real journey - the journey of EMR Adoption which is a different ballgame altogether. We dwell briefly on our aspirations for this latter stage at the end of the seminar.
BIODATA:
Dr Gamaliel Tan is the Chief Medical Informatics Officer (CMIO) at JurongHealth and was instrumental in the procurement and implementation of the first Epic electronic medical record (EMR) system in Singapore. He also set up the organisation's Medical Informatics department, which is responsible for the deployment and maintenance of the paperless electronic medical record system.
Dr Tan graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1995. He completed his Orthopaedic training in Singapore and obtained his FRCS (Edinburgh) in 2004. He went on to do a clinical fellowship in spine surgery at the University of Toronto, Toronto Western Hospital from 2006 to 2007. He then returned to work in Singapore in Tan Tock Seng Hospital as an Orthopaedic spine surgeon.
Dr Tan joined JurongHealth in 2010 and set up a new Orthopaedics department in Alexandra Hospital in preparation for the upcoming Ng Teng Fong General Hospital. His main interest is in spine surgery, whereby he manages a variety of spinal conditions covering degenerative, traumatic, infective, deformity and tumor cases.
In addition, Dr Tan is involved in undergraduate teaching in his appointment as an adjunct staff at the National University of Singapore. He sits on the RAC (Orthopaedics), which oversees the orthopaedic residency programme in Singapore. He is also involved in research in his collaboration with the National University of Singapore and has recent publications in the field of spine tumors and cervical spondylotic myelopathy.
