Towards Creating an Effective Flipped Classroom eCourse

ABSTRACT:
The underlying idea behind the flipped classroom pedagogy lies with dividing the learning activities of students into two key segments. In the first segment, students view online chunked lectures, read textbook and participate in formative and/or summative assessments at their own pace and time outside class in order to acquire the knowledge about a specific subject matter. In the second segment, students learn how to apply their acquired knowledge in the first segment by engaging in active 'knowledge sparring' activities with their teacher and class mates in classes. Through the two activities, students should be able to hone their learning, communication, analytical thinking and critical thinking skills, while at the same time become more knowledgeable and proficient in the subject matter. This pedagogy has been deemed as being more effective in enhancing students' learning as compared to the traditional lecturing practice.
The flipped classroom pedagogy has been successfully implemented in various school environments (e.g. secondary schools) and in various subject matters (e.g. science) with many empirical evidences to support its effectiveness. However, the adoption of this teaching pedagogy in the institution of higher learning (iHL) has been slow in Singapore. Beside the challenges in changing the culture of the dominant lecturing practices in iHL, creating an effective flipped classroom eCourse that can solicit the maximum participation and increase the learning of students is a non-trivial task that involves a combination of the technologies and new teaching practices.
In this seminar, Dr Jenson Goh will share the various attempts and efforts that he had made to design and implement an effective flipped classroom eCourse called 'Project Management'. In SIM University's School of Business, the flipped classroom pedagogy has been implemented in more than 50% of its courses. Dr Goh will share the key practices being implemented in SIM University and his views about them. The seminar is designed to be a part presentation, part participation and part discussion session as Dr Jenson Goh seeks to engage the participants in a lively discussion on ways in which an effective flipped classroom eCourse can be designed and implemented in the iHL.
BIODATA:
Dr. Jenson Goh received his BSc in Computer Science, MSc in Computer Science and Ph.D. in Information Systems from the National University of Singapore in 1997, 2001 and 2012 respectively. He is currently a teaching academic in SIM University's School of Business. He is an avid case study writer who is passionate about the use of case to enhance student's learning in class. He was the technical coordinator of the School of Computing's Asian IT Case Series and was one of the organizing committee in School of Computing's inaugural Case Competition. In recent years, he has won two teaching case awards in International Teaching Case Writing competitions.
Prior to joining SIM University, he had more than 16 years of IT managerial experiences in NUS and was leading several large scale IT strategic projects. For his strong technical competencies, he was handpicked into the 8-month intensive Java Belt training programme sponsored by NUS, iDA and SUN Microsystems among 20 national IT elites in 2003. For his exemplary service and dedication to NUS, he was selected into the prestigious NUS GEMS programme and was awarded the NUS Quality Service (Service Champion) twice. For his innovative use of IT to resolve business challenges, he had won more than 20 International and National Service Quality Awards. He was certified in all SUN Java and Solaris System & Network Administrator and is currently a certified IT project manager, Lean Six Sigma Black Belt and TOGAF.
Dr Jenson Goh also believes strongly in serving the society. He currently serves as a Singapore Quality Award (SQA), Singapore Service Excellence Medallion and Singapore Productivity Award Assessor for SPRING Singapore. He also serves as the Head, Manpower and Logistics in his Police National Service and is responsible for the operational readiness of around 1,600 Police NSmen. For his dedication and leadership in National Service, he was nominated for the Best Police NSman of the year award in FY2014/2015 and was awarded the Commission of Police's Commendation in 2013.
