Abstract:
This talk will introduce the CONNECT centre in Ireland and present our vision for 5G communication systems. This vision revolves around increasing commodification of all network resources (spectrum, base stations, sensors, backhaul, processing power, storage etc.), the desire to not own everything, the dominance of the service-driven approach, and the emergence of new forms of non-monetary currencies. Overall open communication paradigms, and opportunities for extreme sharing will be promoted. These ideas will be illustrated with results from different CONNECT research projects. The talk will challenge some of the core ideas and concepts emerging in Europe.

Biodata:
Linda Doyle is Professor of Engineering and The Arts in Trinity College, University of Dublin, Ireland. She is the Director of CONNECT. CONNECT is a national research centre in Ireland, focused on future cellular, next generation broadband and IoT. The centre comprises 10 different Irish academic institutions, is headquartered in Trinity College Dublin and has 40 industry partners. Prof Doyle's expertise is in the fields of wireless communications, cognitive radio, reconfigurable networks, spectrum management and creative arts practices. Prof Doyle has raised over 70 million in research funding in the past decade and has published widely in her field. Prof. Doyle is seen internationally as an advocate for change in spectrum management practices and has played a role in spectrum policy at the national and international level. Currently she is a member of the National Broadband Steering Committee in Ireland, and is a member of the Ofcom Spectrum Advisory Board in the UK. Prof. Doyle is on the advisory board of Wireless@KTH in Sweden. She is a Fellow of Trinity College Dublin. She is on the Board of the Festival of Curiosity A STEM outreach activity for children based on a city-centre yearly science festival. She is a judge in the BT Young Scientist, Ireland's premier science competition for school children. She is on the Boards of the Douglas Hyde Gallery and Pallas Studios. Prof. Doyle is a Director of Xcelerit and SRS, two recent CONNECT spin-outs.
